Wheelchair Motorhome / Accessible Motorhome / Mobile Home Remodel
CHALLENGE: Make an Accessible Wheelchair Motorhome entrance and bedroom safer and easier to use.
SOLUTION: Install a Modular Ramp for the entrance and a Grab Bar and Advantage Rail (4-Foot Adjustable Support Pole) for the bedroom stairway.
Modifying a Motorhome to become an accessible motorhome isn't the type of job we get every day but the same principles for a home can be applied to a mobile home remodel.
The bedroom area was three steps up from the kitchen and posed a challenge going up and down the stairs. The doorway was narrow but didn't offer anything to hold on to and was difficult, especially at night when the lights were off. We mounted a grab bar vertically on one side of the doorway and a Advantage Rail (4-Foot Adjustable Support Pole) on the other side. The Support Pole has a horizontal bar that swings from side-to-side and locks into several positions. The horizontal bar could be positioned across the door at night to prevent falling down the stairs in the dark.
To make it easier to get in and out of the matching reclining chairs in the living room, we installed a couch cane between them.
When not out on the road travelling, the Accessible Motorhome had a reserved space at a permanent RV Park. The biggest challenge was getting a wheelchair in and out of the RV. Because of the tight space between RVs at the park, we used a Modular Ramp that offered a low gradient slope for the entrance.
