ALS – Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (often called Lou Gehrig’s Disease) is a neurodegenerative disease that usually affects the motor neurons and causes degeneration throughout the brain and spinal cord.

Lou Gehrig - Accessible DesignSymptoms usually arise by a weakness in a hand, foot, arm or leg. Other early
symptoms include difficulty walking or speech problems.

ALS often times affects people between the ages of 40 and 70. It is estimated that 30,000 Americans have the disease and 5,600 new cases are diagnosed each year. Every 90 minutes, an American dies of ALS.

The cause of the disease is not fully understood so treatment options are limited. Currently, RiluzoleĀ® is FDA approved for treating the condition. Breathing and feeding assistance for good nutrition can enhance quality of life.
